Ontario does it best!

I hate that we missed two weeks of the pick-your-own season, but we were away!  Now that we are back and in full swing of the summer picking season, we have NOT bought ANY vegetables at the supermarket (unless they aren't available through pick-your-own and we need them for a recipe).  Now that we have had all of this fresh stuff two weeks in a row, we don't EVER want to go back to store bought (read: shipped from California, Mexico etc)!  So yesterday, we picked WAY too many fruits and veggies...to the point that our freezer and fridge are full!  Uh oh!

Here's what we picked:

End of the season strawberries!  While, there were not many left, and we had to do a lot of work to pick 2 lbs worth, it was/is well worth it!!!!!  The little ones are absolutely sweet and delicious!!!

Fresh green peas!  Luckily, we still have 2 weeks left to keep picking these, but we have some to freeze as well!  I should have shelled them first, but now I know for next time!  These are a lot of work, but the taste of them is SO WORTH IT! (And I HATE peas!)

Green and Yellow beans!  Until last week, we had never picked these fresh!  Let me tell you, GO NOW!  They are so much better hand picked, and SO EASY TO PICK!!!! They grow in such an abundance on one plant, that you can stop at one plant, pick over 20 beans and then go on to the next!  We over estimated how many beans we picked, and when I got home to wash them all...WE HAD 4 FREEZER BAGS FULL!!!

Raspberries.  YUM!  While I think they could still use a good week longer to be perfect, there were some REALLY good ones!  I don't mind if they a slightly under ripe, as I am using them for a raspberry coulis for my dark chocolate cupcakes!!!

Snow peas...or as we call them in this house: Mangetouts.  We both LOVE LOVE LOVE these, and steam them for 2 minutes (fresh veg takes NO time to cook at all!), then sprinkle with freshly ground salt and pepper!  DELCIOUS!  It tastes a lot like you put butter on them, but it's the natural taste they have instead!!!!!!!!!!

My mouth is watering now!!!

PLEASE GO OUT AND SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL FARMERS!!!!!!!  THEY HAVE GROWN YOU SOME AMAZING STUFF THIS SUMMER!
